Disney+ has released a brand new American Born Chinese teaser trailer for the upcoming coming-of-age fantasy dramedy centering around a high school student who suddenly gets caught in the middle of a battle between Chinese mythological gods. The series will be available for streaming on May 24.

The American Born Chinese teaser gives us a preview of some of the show’s action sequences featuring Michelle Yeoh’s character Guanyin. The video also unveils our first look at Ke Huy Quan’s Freddy Wong and Stephanie Hsu’s Shiji Niangniang, as they reunite with Yeoh after starring in the acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

For Yeoh and Quan’s performances in the A24 film, they recently each won their first Academy Award for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Meanwhile, Hsu received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her memorable role as Joy/ Jobu Tupaki.

“It tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life,” reads the synopsis. “When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.”

Disney+’s American Born Chinese is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by brothers Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) and Charles Yu (Westworld), with Kelvin Yu also set as the showrunner. It is being described as a genre-hopping action-comedy that is set to explore issues of identity, culture, and family.

The series stars Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi) as Guanyin, Ben Wang (MacGyver) as Jin Wang, Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season) as Christine Wang, Chin Han (Mortal Kombat) as Simon Wang, Daniel Wu (Reminiscence) as Sun Wukong, Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies) as Freddy Wong, former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu as Wei-Chen and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic) as Amelia.

American Born Chinese is executive produced by Cretton, the Yu Brothers, Gene Luen Yang, Erin O’Malley, Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, and Asher Goldstein. The series is a production by 20th Television.
